Anarchy rules roads despite measures

KATHMANDU, NOV 21 - The Special Security Plan (SSP) seems to have failed when it comes to keeping anarchy off the roads, a major objective of the plan.

Records at the Police Headquarters show that bandas and protests on the arteries have gone up in the last two months.

Last month (Kartik), the country witnessed a total of 202 bandas and protests, mostly in the eastern region and the Kathmandu Valley, against the previous month’s total of 79 bandas and protests.  Kartik witnessed at least 72 road blockades in different parts of the country, in which four people died and 17 got injured, while Asoj saw 53 blockades that killed four people and injured 34.

Police said lack of coordination between local administration and local and central police was to blame for the rise in bandas and road strikes. “We too have failed when it comes to getting rid of bandas and road obstructions,” said Deputy Inspector General of Police and Police Spokesperson Bigyanraj Sharma. DIG Sharma expressed commitment to tackling these problems.

The plan appears to have failed on another front too: Crime control.

In the last one month, a total of 1,244 criminal cases, including 16 abductions, 277 social crimes, 297 murder-related cases and 140 organised and financial crimes, were reported to police. With a total of 288 crime cases, the Kathmandu Valley topped the month’s nationwide crime chart.
