Maoists to allow budget endorsement; unveil third phase protests
KATHMANDU, NOV 21 - After months of inflexibility to press their demands for civilian supremacy, the main opposition Unified CPN (Maoist) on Saturday decided to resume House business for the next three days to allow the endorsement of the annual budget.
Saying that the party is responsible towards the people, nation, security body and the government officials, the Maoist Central Committee meeting at the party headquarters in Koteshwor today decided to remove the deadlock facing the Parliament for budget endorsement.
Organising a press conference after the meeting, UCPN (M) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal made public the party decision.
He said the party was forced to announce their third phase of protests as the repeated efforts to forge agreement on the issues of civilian supremacy and President’s move with the government had failed.
Chairman Dahal unveiled one-month long third phase of protests starting tomorrow which includes publicity from Nov. 22-30, sister organisations protests from Dec. 1-10 and protests of the regional and ethnic liberations fronts from Dec. 11-22.
After announcing the third phase of protests, Maoist chairman Dahal said that the protests would continue until the party’s demands were met.
The Maoists also warned to launch an indefinite strike if their demands were not met by Dec.22.
