Foreign airlines apply to link Nepal

Kathmandu, Nov 19 - Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) Nagendra Prasad Ghimire said that air accessibility to Nepal, which is crucial to making the upcoming Nepal Tourism Year 2011 a success, was expanding.

Speaking at the 11th anniversary celebration of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) here on Tuesday, he said that a number of international airways were seeking permission to operate flights to Nepal.

Ghimire, who is also chairman of the NTB, said that Kingfisher Air had applied to operate a weekly flight between Kathmandu and Mumbai.

"Similarly, Jet Airways has also asked for additional daily flight permission besides its existing flights," he said. Fly Dubai has also registered its application to operate Kathmandu-Dubai flights. "We are at the final stage of granting permission to Fly Dubai," he added. He said that China had agreed to operate Manasarovar airport from July that will directly link Nepal and Tibet.

"Our first target is to link Manasarovar with Nepalgunj that will allow large numbers of Nepali and Indians pilgrims to visit this destination," he said.

He added that Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) was becoming congested with the increased frequency of domestic and international flights.

He said that the ministry was in the process of handing over the management of TIA to an international private sector management company to make a drastic improvement.

Prachanda Man Shrestha, CEO of NTB, said that Nepal's tourism sector was getting a good response abroad.
