New wetland found in Kakarvitta

Kakarvitta, Nov 18 -

A new wetland — considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems — has been found in Bahundagi, nine kilometers north of Kakarvitta — the entrance gate of eastern Nepal.
Local residents call the wetland "Kawaidhap" spread in five bigha of land having a static perennial reservoir and marsh. The area remains warm during summers and cold in winters without extreme temperatures.
Following the finding, a local development organisation is active for conservation and tourism promotion of the wetland.
We have a preliminary plan to expand the wetland to 12 bigha of area and build a suspension bridge to lure internal and external tourists, said Arjun Karki, member of Bahundangi Development Campaign.
Karki said some species of endangered birds dwell in this area and winter migratory birds arrive from Siberia to escape the cold.
Wetlands provide a valuable flood control function and are very effective at filtering and cleaning water.
