TU hikes fee ten-fold
May face student ire
KATHMANDU, NOV 17 - Tribhuvan University (TU) has hiked tuition fee by 10-fold after 18 years, but the decision is likely to provoke student protest.
TU had attempted to raise fees a number of times before, but could not do so due to protests from students.
Finally, on Nov. 4, the TU academic council decided to hike the fee at any cost. The decision was made public on Sunday.
“We were compelled to hike the fee as neither the government gives us any extra fund, nor are there alternative income sources,” said TU Vice Chancellor Madhav Sharma.
According to Sharma, it is impossible to procure necessary educational materials, equip co-lleges and compete with other universities with a two-decade-old fee structure. Sharma assured that the university would procure adequate educational materials, follow the educational ca-lendar and provide the latest information technology and students would feel the difference.
A student at the Bachelor’s Level will now have to pay
Rs. 500 for entrance, library fee Rs. 150 and monthly tuition fee Rs. 500 — an annual total of
Rs. 6,650, whereas a student at the same level currently pays
Rs. 50, Rs.60 and Rs.50 respectively under the same titles.
Likewise, a student at Master’s Level will now pay Rs. 500 for entrance, library fee Rs. 200 and monthly tuition fee Rs. 700 — an annual total of Rs. 9,100, whereas an MA student currently pays Rs. 50, Rs. 61 and Rs. 75 respectively
under the same titles. TU also decided to increase the fee automatically by 10 percent every two years.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the heads of 12-student unions on Monday scheduled a five-phase protest programme concluding that the decision was an injustice on students. It also concluded that TU should utilise its idle resources and restructure the student-teacher ratio. If these do not happen, protest will continue until the decision is rolled back, the unions warned.
