POKHARA, NOV 13 - Fifteen people from Pokhara in Kaski district have tested positive for AH1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu. Nineteen people had provided their saliva sample for lab test at the Walter Reed/AFRIMS Research Unit-Nepal, a joint medical research centre set up by governments of the US and Thailand.

“Of the 19 subjects, 15 tested positive with AH1N1 virus,” said Dr. Duk Bahadur Chhetri, lab pathologist of the research centre. “The subjects who tested positive for the virus are between the age group of two to 14.”

He added that Western Regional Hospital, Pokhara, was informed soon after the virus was confirmed. “For official confirmation, the test results have also been sent to National Public Health Laboratory.”

The centre had set up its unit at the Western Regional Hospital some six months ago. So far, it has sent over 900 samples to its Kathmandu-based laboratory for test.

Meanwhile, the samples collected from swine flu suspects in Baglung, Parbat and Myagdi districts are currently undergoing test at National Publice Health Laboratory in Kathmandu for confirmation. The lab results are expected to come out by Sunday.

As of Friday, the Ministry of Health (MoH) has confirmed 63 cases of swine flu, excluding the cases found in Pokhara.

“So far the official count is 63 but since the disease has spread in the community we fear that the actual number could be much more,” said Dr. Jintendra Man Shrestha, Deputy Coordinator of Avian Influenza Control Project under the MoH.
