Nepal-India border pillars 'to be restored'
More than 60 border pillars that are supposed to mark the Nepal-India boundaries in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts are either missing, innoticeable or in bad shapes.
DHANGADHI, OCT 28 - The long-standing territorial dispute between Nepal and India at the bordering areas in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts could be resolved at least to a certain level as the two sides have recently agreed to restore the missing and ruined border pillars.
A meeting of the concerned districts’ chiefs held at Paliya, India, last week agreed to rebuild and restore the pillars that mark the boundaries between the two countries.
As per the meeting’s decision, the Indian side will build the pillars with even numbers and the Nepal side will restore the pillars with odd numbers, said Harikrishna Poudel, chief district officer of Kailali. "For disputed border areas," he said, "the two sides have agreed to recommend the concerned authorities for re-delineation of the boundary."
More than 60 border pillars that are supposed to mark the Nepal-India boundaries in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts are either missing, innoticeable or in bad shapes. This has led to growing instances of territorial encroachment.
