3G net service on horizon

KATHMANDU, OCT 17 - Nepal Telecom (NT) in collaboration with Room to Read and Qualcomm Company is all set to conduct a pilot study to launch 3G wireless internet service in Nepal. If everything goes according to the plan, internet users in the country will soon enjoy a swift and hassle-free service.

3G (third generation) internet provides faster service with more facilities than what we are using today.

“3G internet service will be much faster compared to the present one,” said Nissen Shrestha, IT officer at Room to Read. “ It will provide video conference call and live telecast facilities besides high speed internet service.” According to Shrestha, mobile phones with such facilities can be a port for live broadcasting.

Room to Read has provided 21 branded computers to two schools—Shree Shreekhandapur Higher Secondary School in Kavre and Shree Amar Jyoti Gaonfarka Secondary School Jaldhara Danda in Kaski—in order to assess the efficacy of the service during the pilot study.

“In order to equip students with the computer knowledge, we are launching the 3G internet project,” said Pushkar Shrestha, Room to Read’s country director. “Not only students and teachers but the entire community will benefit from this facility.” The schools, however, might face financial problems after the NT launches the service commercially, he added. The pilot project will be officially launched on Oct. 26 from these two schools.

The schools were chosen taking into consideration the availability of special towers required for the operation of

third generation internet service in these two districts. According to IT officer Shrestha, the tower provides service within a range of two kilometres and the internet speed can be up to 1.6 mbps.

“The schools selected for the study will use the service free of cost,” said Surendra Thike, NT spokesman.

The NT is also conducting a study about the 3G service to assess its effectiveness and feasibility before launching it commercially, he said.
