KATHMANDU, OCT 15 - Protests against the government decision to phase out LPG run three-wheelers took a new turn on Wednesday after angry protesters burnt effigies of Mohammad Aftab Alam, Minister for Labour and Transport, and of Sharad Chandra Poudel, chief of the Department of Transport Management.

The protests obstructed traffic movement on the Ring Road from Koteswor to Gwarko for two hours in the morning. According to Ram Kumar Blon, coordinator of the struggle committee, the protests will continue till the government takes back its decision.

The struggle committee has demanded that gas run three-wheelers be left to work as they are. In the event of a replacement, the committee has demanded that compensation be provided for the old vehicles, or that a 99 percent subsidy be provided for the new ones. So far, the government has stuck to its initial decision, and refused to comment further.
