USD 5m Norwegian support for disqualified PLA men
The funds will be channeled to other peace related activities if no formal discharge has taken place by this date
KATHMANDU, OCT 11 - Norway is providing USD 5 million for the discharge and rehabilitation of the disqualified Maoist army personnel, on the condition that concrete progress is underway and formal discharge takes place by Jan. 22, 2010.
According to the press statement issued by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kathmandu, Norway is encouraged by the renewed commitment of the Nepal government and the Unified CPN (Maoist) regarding discharge and rehabilitation of the disqualified Maoist combatants. The embassy said that the funding will be channeled through the UN Peace Fund for Nepal in support of the implementation of rehabilitation programmes.
The funding is provided on the condition that significant progress is underway by Jan. 22, 2010, reads the statement, adding, “The funds will be channeled to other peace related activities if no formal discharge has taken place by this date.”
Meanwhile, procedure for the discharge of the disqualified combatants has commenced officially on Sunday. A team including Peace Minister Rakam Chemjong, UNMIN Chief Karin Landgren and Maoist deputy commander Chandra Prakash Khanal 'Baldev' reached the PLA second division cantonment at Dudhauli in Sindhuli, as a part of the discharge procedure.
