KATHMANDU, OCT 09 - Almost 15 years after pulling out from the proposed 201-MW Arun III Hydropower Project that effectively killed the project, the World Bank (WB) has proposed investing in a hydel project with the capacity exceeding 100 MW.

The bank offered loan for such a project during a meeting between a WB delegation headed by Raghuveer Sharma, team leader of the Cross-Border Energy Programme, and government officials, which concluded on

Thursday.

The WB team was here on a four-day visit starting Oct. 5 with a mission to firm up assistance for the finalisation of the Dhalkebar (Nepal)-Muzaffarpur (India) transmission line.

According to Shankar Prasad Koirala, secretary at the Ministry of Energy, the WB has sought proposal for a 100 to 300MW project that can be commissioned as soon as possible.

“We will decide and forward a proposal to the Ministry of Finance as per WB’s requirements after a meeting,” Koirala said.

The Arun III project was expected to add 1.71 billion units of power annually to the national grid, a significant contribution to the present  annual power

requirement of 3.50 billion, said Sher Singh Bhat, chief at the Nepal Electricity Authority’s System Operations and Maintenance Department.

After WB’s withdrawal from Arun III, the state has witnessed completion of hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 296 MW.
