Chinese anniversary sees Tibetan protests in Capital
KATHMANDU, OCT 02 - The police detained at least 50 Tibetan protestors on Thursday as they tried to stage demonstrations outside the Chinese Embassy and other places in the Capital on the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
The police detained at least 24 Tibetan protesters from outside the Chinese Embassy’s visa section at Hattisar. At least 100 protestors chanted slogans and waved Tibetan flags before they were rounded up by the police.
On Thursday morning, the police arrested 38 Tibetan exiles after receiving reports that they intended to gather for anti-China protests in different parts of the Capital. Police said they would be released after necessary investigation.
The arrests came as China celebrated 60 years of communist rule with a military parade and lavish ceremonies in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.
Nepal is home to around 20,000 exiled Tibetans who began arriving in large numbers in 1959 when the Dalai Lama fled Tibet after a failed uprising. Nepal is a supporter of China’s “One China” policy that views Tibet as an integral part of China. The government of Nepal has come under increasing pressure from China to suppress anti-China activity on its soil.
Meanwhile, the government has decided to deploy Armed Police Force (APF) personnel along the Nepal-China border in Mustang after the Chinese government raised concerns about organised anti-China activities by Tibetan refugees from Mustang.
Accordingly, a team of 25 APF personnel led by Inspector Damodar Dhodari has left for Mustang. The size of the border security force will be expanded to 150 after a situation analysis. Mustang Chief District Officer Umesh Kumar Dhakal admitted that preparations were on to deploy AFP along Mustang’s border with China. Currently, there is only one check post of the Nepal Police at Lomanthang in northern Mustang for border security.
