Washington okays Sharma as Nepali envoy
KATHMANDU, SEP 24 - The United States has approved the name of ambassador nominee Dr Shanker Sharma. The US government sent an approval letter on Wednesday, said a Foreign Ministry official. Sharma, who was the Vice Chairman of National Planning Commission from 1998- 2009, was picked from Nepali Congress's ambassadorial quota.
The post was lying vacant after former envoy Dr Suresh Raj Chalise was called back last year.
However, names of three proposed ambassadors-- Rukma Sumsher Rana (India), Sushil Chandra Amatya (Sri Lanka ) and Bhoj Raj Ghimire (Canada)-- are yet to be confirmed by the respective countries. The Foreign Ministry had also sent names of ambassador nominees Pradhumna Bikram Shah (Brazil) and Madhuban Poudel (Kuwait) for approval.
Likewise, South Africa has not yet confirmed Nepal's proposal to open a mission there although Arun Dhital has already been proposed as ambassador. The government has not appointed Ram Karki and Dr Ram Swarth Rai Yadav, whose names have already been approved as envoys to France and the U.K respectively. Both of them were nominated by Maoist-led government.
