These findings are not the end. We are receiving more data and are updating regularly
KATHMANDU, SEP 22 - An internal report of the government has revised the death toll during the 10-year armed conflict. It puts the death toll at 16,278.
The second task force set up by the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction led by former secretary Govinda Pandey states that 16,278 people lost their lives during the conflict. The latest data is based on reports collected from 73 districts that were badly affected by the insurgency. Manang and Mustang were taken as marginally affected districts.
The data mainly deals with damages caused after the announcement of the 'people's war' waged by the then CPN (Maoist) till its end following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed between the then Seven Party Alliance and the Maoists. The districts most affected by the insurgency such as Rolpa, Rukum and Achham topped the list in terms of the death toll.
The government had recently constituted a third task force led by UML cadre Moti Poudel of Parbat district to collect additional data on deaths, the number of injured, destroyed properties, number of abductions, internally displaced and other damages caused by the insurgency.
The recently submitted report at the ministry stated that 5,640 people were injured during the insurgency and the numbers might go higher, claimed an official adding that there was no record of the injured who had received monetary support from the Health Ministry.
"These findings are not the end. We are receiving more data and are updating regularly," said member secretary of the task force, Dhurva Gaida. According to the report, 1,221 are still missing.
Likewise, 70,425 persons and 18,707 families were displaced.
